Reasons Why You Will Add More Calories During The Christmas Season

The festive season is here with us once again, and this means spending lots of time with family and friends catching up, watching movies and celebrating. The cold Christmas season makes people add unwanted weight because they don’t follow their regular routine and they stop or do minimal exercises, hibernate most of the time because of the cold or eating unhealthy. Most people take this festive season as a time to relax and enjoy themselves with the notion that they will go back to eating healthy and exercising on January 1st.

Every meal that you take counts, so whatever you eat adds calories to your body no matter the amount. If you decided to eat unhealthy meals throughout you will add more weight that could be a problem to lose once you go back to the normal regime. Foods that will make you add weight this Christmas season include:

  1. Eating more of unhealthy meals

From breakfast to dinner and in between snacks, there is a lot of unhealthy food such as potatoes, sugar-sweetened beverages, potato chips, processed and unprocessed meats all of which have high calories. Although there may be healthy meals and snacks such as vegetables, fruits, yogurt and nuts, this is not an attractive choice because you are in the festive mood. If you eat the unhealthy meals each day from morning to evening, then you will add weight.

  1. Going to a party when you are hungry

When you are invited to a party, it is evident that there will be lots of food both healthy and unhealthy, so if you go while you are hungry, you will face temptation, and this will make you indulge a lot.  It is important to take a nutritious snack before going to the party so as to reduce your hunger levels and make you eat a little amount of food.

  1. Eating everything offered on the buffet

At a buffet, there is a lot of food, and you may be tempted to fill a big plate, especially if you get to see a favorite meal in the buffet or want to taste everything that is being offered.  It is advisable to use a small plate and start your meals with fruits and vegetables, which will make you feel full faster.

  1. Portion size

There is a lot of food during this season and so many parties with various delicious foods, hence you will have a lot to eat. You may be tempted to eat more than your normal portions, especially if you are occasionally snacking on the sweet snacks and with food readily available.

  1. Too much alcohol and sweetened drinks

Alcohol is a must have for most parties and it being free makes matters worse. When you take a lot of alcohol you add calories and also lose control of what you eat because the more alcohol you take, the more you eat.  Even if you don’t take alcohol, the sweetened drinks are not the best either as they contain high sugar and calorie content hence add weight to the body.

  1. Desserts

The dessert table always has sweet things such as ice cream, chocolate, and these have high-calorie count. Indulging in these will cause you to add weight faster so you need to go slow on the sweets even if you have a sweet tooth.

  1. Staying hungry

You may be avoiding overeating, so you will opt to stay away from food by staying hungry. Staying hungry will make you indulge in more food when you get time and sit down to eat. When you are hungry, it will also cause you to munch unhealthy snacks such as sugar cookies, and this will be doing more harm than good.

Physical inactivity is another way that will make you add weight during the Christmas season. It is important to get active and not stay indoors always so as to burn the extra calories that you are accumulating in your body. Doing a little bit of exercise is much better than no exercise at all. You can really lose some calories off your body even if you do some simple exercises such as push-ups each morning, take a walk or even get to do some sports and you don’t need to go to the gym. The sports can be done in a group with your friends as a way warming up and also having fun. When you participate in any activity, you are engaging the body to burn the excess calories instead of storing them as fat.

Some of the top calorie burning spots include:

Basketball helps burn 800 calories per hour, and you will develop endurance, flexibility, and cardiorespiratory health.

  • Running- an early morning run will energize you throughout the day and running at 8 mph for an hour will help burn 1,500 calories.
  • Racket sports such as badminton and tennis will not only help you lose up to 800 calories per hour, but will also contribute to building lower body strength and endurance.
  • Dancing- although it is not a sport, you can go to the parties not only to eat but dance. Dancing for an hour will help you lose about 310 calories.
  • Boxing- whether in the ring or kickboxing, this will burn about 800 calories per hour
  • Martial arts such as taekwondo, judo or Mua Thai allows you to tone your muscles and burn up to 1,100 calories per hour.

You can share these fun sports with other people, and this will give them an idea of how to enjoy their Christmas, but also reduce their calories and stay fit during this season.
